Sarajevo weather is characteristically continental, with warm summers and extremely cold, snowy winters. Weather in Sarajevo is primarily influenced by its positioning amongst two zones, the central European to Mediterranean to the south.

Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located at the centre of the country. The city lies in the Sarajevo valley, by the Miljacka River, and is surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. These mountains apart from the good trekking and skiing opportunities they provide also have an immense influence on Sarajevo weather.

Although the city’s closeness to the Adriatic Sea helps moderate Sarajevo weather to some extent, the mountainous regions to the south greatly reduce this maritime influence.  On average temperatures throughout the year increase quite evenly mainly from the months between January and July, and then distinctly decrease towards the end of December.

The average annual temperature in Sarajevo is 9.5 °C, the month of January being the coldest, with mercury plummeting as low as a freezing −1.3 °C. The warmest month of the year is July with temperatures of 19.1 °C, closely followed by August whose average temperatures stand at 18.8 °C, occasionally taking a slight ascent to a warmer 22°C. October is the wettest month, but reasonable amounts of precipitation occur fairly consistently throughout the year, with 170 days of rainfall on average annually.

Characteristically, Sarajevo weather can be expected to produce 68 days per year when conditions follow distinctively summery patterns with warm temperatures which reach highs of 30 °C. The city normally experiences mildly cloudy skies, with an average yearly cloud cover of 59%. December is the month with the majority of cloud cover, as high as 75%, while the month with the least is August 37%. On average, August is characteristically the sunniest month, experiencing 270 hours of sunshine, whilst December on the other hand has an average of 41 sun filled hours.

A blustery weather in Sarajevo is accustomed by difficult assistance that causes its huge modifications in direction and speed. Dominant wind stream comes from southeast and western quadrants. Average air temperatures throughout the year are 20.4 °C.

Thanks to Sarajevo weather rather favorable conditions, winter sports flourish in the city, hence the city was the proud host of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.
